Treatment of hemolytic anemia:
Actually, the treatment depends on the type of hemolytic anemia. In general, folic acid can be prescribed because active haemolysis may cause folate deficiency. Transfusion therapy can also be achoice as well as Plasmapheresis. Please note that iron therapy can be prescribed in some cases with severe intravascular haemolysis. In autoimmune haemolytic anaemia, corticosteroids are indicated for the warm type with some other immunosuppressive medications such as azathioprine. Furthermore, splenectomy may be the first choice of treatment in some types of haemolytic anaemia such as hereditary spherocytosis.

Diagnosis:

It depends on different types of investigations such as CBC which shows Hb (low), MCV & MCH (Normal). LDH and Bilirubin levels are (high) while haptoglobin is (low). Coombs' test for autoimmune haemolytic anaemia. Ultrasound to estimate spleen size.

Causes of hemolytic anemia:

1. Genetic:
- Red cell membrane abnormalities: hereditary spherocytosis, elliptocytosis.
- Haemoglobin abnormalities: sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia.
- Enzyme defects: G6PD deficiency, pyruvate kinase deficiency.
2. Acquired:
- Immune: such as haemolytic disease of newborn, blood transfusion reaction and autoimmune haemolytic anaemia.
- Non-immune such as trauma, infection (malaria, sepsis), hypersplenism, and liver disease.

Recommendation:

It's recommended to follow up with hematologist.
