What is head lice treatment?

• Non-prescription drugs for head lice are effective and should be the first treatment you use. Include permethrin lotion 1%
• Both drugs only kill live lice, not eggs, so they should be re-applied in 7-10 days to kill newly fertilized lice. These treatments are only absorbed through the skin, but should not be used on children younger than two years. Use these medications exactly as directed. These insecticide drugs should not be applied in larger or more recommended quantities.
• Do not wash hair for 1-2 days after treatment.
• After treatment, wear clean clothes and wash other clothes, bed linens, towels in hot water and dry them using a hot cycle for at least 20 minutes.
• Wash anything your child has treated in the last 48 hours in hot water for at least 5 minutes.
• Place potentially contaminated material but not washable in plastic bags for two weeks. (Lice will die within two days, and the wolves will hatch and die within two weeks.)
• Tell your school nurse, teacher, or day care provider if your child has been diagnosed with head lice. Your child can return to school after proper treatment.
• Do not share combs, brush hair, hats, towels, bedding, clothes, headphones, stuffed toys, or other things with someone with head lice.
• Malathion Lotion 0.5% - kills lice and some eggs and can only be used on children over the age of 6 years. Malathion can irritate the skin and it is flammable. It can be absorbed into the skin, especially if left on the skin for a long time
• Lindane shampoo 1% - This can be toxic and is absorbed into the bloodstream and therefore, no longer used much anymore. This medicine is used only when other drugs have failed.
• Ivermectin pills This is used only when other drugs have failed.
