Treatment of advanced breast cancer ?

For women with stage IV breast cancer, systemic (drug) therapies are the main treatments. These may include:
  • Hormone therapy like tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor and This may be combined with a targeted drug such as palbociclib, ribociclib , abemaciclib
  • Chemotherapy (chemo)
  • Targeted drugs, such as trastuzumab and pertuzumab
  • Some combination of these
  • Surgery and/or radiation therapy may be useful in certain situations

important points you should know:

  • Unlike breast cancer that remains in the breast or nearby lymph nodes, you cannot get rid of all the cancer that has spread to other organs.
  • However, this doesn’t mean metastatic breast cancer can’t be treated.
  • Treatment of metastatic breast cancer focuses on length and quality of life.
  • Your treatment plan is guided by many factors, including:
  1.     The biology of the tumor (characteristics of the cancer cells)
  2.     Where the cancer has spread
  3.     Your symptoms
  4.     Past breast cancer treatments

Prognosis?

  • When breast cancer spreads to the bone, it can be treated but cannot be cured
  • Treatment aims to control and slow down the spread of the cancer
  • Treatment for secondary breast cancer in the bone aims to relieve symptoms such as pain, maintain and improve mobility and strengthen the bones
  • Bisphophonates and denosumab are drugs that work in slightly different ways to strengthen existing bone and reduce the damage caused by cancer.
  • Denosumab is a targeted (biological) therapy specifically for secondary breast cancer in the bone
You should know also that these drugs have many side effects but relieve the pain which the patient suffered
