Treatment of high level of bilirubin
The cause must be treated
 For itching caused by high bilirubin level , cholestyramine is used
If jaundice is caused by acute viral hepatitis, it may disappear gradually, without treatment, with improved liver condition. However, hepatitis may become chronic, even if the jaundice has disappeared. Jaundice itself does not require any treatment in adults
 If the cause is the clogged bile duct, the procedure can be performed to open the bile duct. This procedure can usually be performed through ERCP, using tools threaded through the endoscope.
 
The most common reasons for increasing the level of bilirubin are
Liver Inflammation
Diseases of alcoholic liver
Blockage of the bile duct by the gallstone (usually) or tumor
reaction to a drug or herb
 
Tests to determine the cause of elevated bilirubin include:
Blood tests to assess the efficiency of liver function and whether it has been damaged (liver function tests)
Imaging tests such as ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Sometimes biopsy or laparoscopy
If bilirubin levels are high, they may cause
Accumulation of substances that are formed when the yellow matter breaks, causing itching throughout the body.
Jaundice itself causes few other symptoms in adults.
Also, many disorders may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and small visible spider veins in the skin.
 Serious problems can include
accumulation of fluid inside the abdomen
 Blood clotting: the presence of hemorrhage or bruising
 Hepatic encephalopathy: The deterioration of brain function due to impaired liver function, allowing the accumulation of toxic substances in the blood, access to the brain, and causing changes in mental functions (such as confusion and drowsiness).
 Hypertension in the portal: Hypertension in veins that bring blood to the liver, which may lead to bleeding in the esophagus and sometimes in the stomach.
