what is prolonged period ?

 long period is defined as menstruation at regular cycle intervals but with excessive flow and duration ( more than 7 days )  and it is considered one of the most common gynecologic complaints

what are the causes of heavy period ?

1. pregnancy
2. Sexual activity

4. endometrial hyperplasia
5. contraceptive use , oral tabs or IUD
6. polycystic ovarian syndrome]
7. Systemic illnesses (hepatic or renal failure or diabetes)
8.  thyroid dysfunction
9.  Current medications (hormones or anticoagulants)
10. Previous medical or surgical procedures or diagnoses

how diagnosis is being made

1. Complete blood count
2. Iron studies (total iron-binding capacity [TIBC] and total iron)
3. Coagulation factor studies
4. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) level
5. Thyroid function tests and prolactin level
6. Hormone assays < esrtogen , progresterone , lh , fsh
7. Pelvic ultrasonography
