What to know about Barbit with pregnancy?
1. Pregnancy Category D, can cause potential fetal damage.
2. Their use in pregnancy alone, or in combination with other anticonvulsants, can cause coagulation defects in the newborn infant which may be preventable by the prophylactic administration of Vitamin K to the mother prior to delivery.
3. Barbit is excreted through human milk, so caution should be taken during lactation period.
What are the uses of Barbit?
1. Sedative and hence it relieves anxiety, tension and fear.
2. Hypnotic and hence it is used for short term insomnia.
3. Pre-anaesthetics.
4. Anti-epileptic in epilepsy with Partial seizure or Generalized Tonic-clonic seizure, status epilepticus.
What are the side effects of Barbit?
1. Drowsiness.
2. CNS depression, nervousness.
3. Agitation.
4. Psychiatric disturbance, lethargy, mental depression.
5. Ataxia.
6. Nightmares.
7. Bradycardia, apnea.
8. Nausea, vomiting.
9. Constipation.
10. Restlessness.
