What is Hepatitis B

?
Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by a virus

How does the virus interact in the body

?
The hepatitis B virus can survive for at least 7 days outside the body.
During this period, the virus remains able to cause infection .
The incubation period is 75 days on average, but can range from 30 to 180 days. The virus can be detected within 30 to 60 days after infection and can continue to be transformed into chronic hepatitis B.

how Hepatitis B virus is transmitted

?
  • Skin or mucous or contaminated blood or body fluids,
  • saliva,
  • Vaginal fluids,
  • Semen
  • Intercourse
  • Transfusion of contaminated blood
  • A contaminated syringe
  • Drug abuse
  • Tattooing
  • Shaving razor

what are the symptoms of Hepatitis B infection?

Most people do not show symptoms during acute infection. However, some people have symptoms at this stage lasting several weeks, including:
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Dark urine,
  • Extreme stress,
  • Nausea,
  • Vomiting,
  • Abdominal pain.
Acute hepatitis can develop in a small subset of patients with severe liver failure that may lead to death.
In some people, the hepatitis B virus may also cause chronic hepatic infections that later develop into liver cirrhosis or liver cancer
.

Who are at risk of chronic disease?

The likelihood of infection turning to chronic infection depends on the age at which the person is infected. Children under the age of six with hepatitis B virus are the most likely to develop a chronic infection
.

Diagnosis of Hepatitis B infection

The laboratory diagnosis of hepatitis B infection is based on detection of the surface antigen of HBsAg.
The acute hepatitis virus infection is characterized by the presence of HBsAg antigen and immunoglobulin (IgM) in the primary stage of HBcAg infection. In the initial stage of infection, patients also show positive antigen for hepatitis B (HBeAg), which is usually evidence of high levels of The presence of the antigen indicates that the blood is infected and their bodily fluids are highly contagious.
Chronic infection is characterized by the presence of HBsAg antigen for at least six months (in conjunction with or without HBeAg antigen). The persistence of the HBsAg antigen is the main risk factor for the development of the condition to chronic liver disease and liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) at a later stage of life
