The geographic tongue appears in the form of soft, irregular red spots on the side of the tongue or above. The spots can change their size, shape, and location.

You may have pain or burning, especially after eating foods that are:
Salty
Acidic
hot

What is the other possible cause of tongue discoloration

Mouth fungus often causes white spots but it can be reddish in color sometimes. These spots can appear on your tongue, but they can also spread to anywhere in your mouth and throat.
Infants and older people are more susceptible to oral fungi. As well as people with impaired immune system or those taking some medications.

What is the treatment of oral fungi ?

Most often, diagnosis can be made on the basis of appearance. Treatment may include antifungal drugs such as nystatin drops in the mouth four times a day
