Hi doctor I have my daughter who been diagnosed to have epilepsy when she was around 14 months old (now she is 30 months old) doctor have started the treatment with keppra and we continued at keppra for almost 1 year and during the treatment she had at least three sezures (short ones) after each the doctor increased the dose until she had one then the doctor decided to treat with depakin and instructed to reduce the keppra dose (this was around 3 moths ago ( she was ok till last week when she had 3 sezures in a day and the last one lasted for around 8 minutes aported by valume I think and IV Phynetone She stayed at hospital observation for 3 days and. The doctor have changed the depakin dose from 240 mg twice daily to 180 mg 3 times a day I will go back to the theists seizure last week which lasted for around 8 to 10 minutes, this seizure was totally different than any other one before as it was like partial as my daughter was awake with open eyes but semi unconscious (depakin dose was 240 mg twice daily). But the two seizures before (in the same day) were complete and the daughter was unconscious and lasted few seconds brain MRI been made and it was very clean, EEG made two time, one last year and another 6 months ago and the doctor stated that the second EEG looks better that's the first one Now doctor, I need your help to understand the direction of treatment whether it is right or wrong? And whether having a partial seizure is a good sign that the depakin is at least started to take an action or having partial seizure is an indication for more complicated case? Finally, what is the chance of treating my daughter from epilepsy with medications?

Treatment of childhood epilepsy

It is common chronic condition. Based on your question, i see the following
  • At first, there are many forms of epilepsy in childhood which differ in forms and symptoms. Treatment may be different from one person to another and changing drugs is normal thing to control epilepsy thus it is normal to change your child drugs to control symptoms.
  • Partial seizures is more complicating than complete and may indicate neurological problems but your MRI test is normal thus do not worry
  • There are high percentage of child with epilepsy have normal life after puberty thus do not worry and your child may have normal life with no epilepsy after years
